Traffic Advisory: Construction Between 6th-7th Streets and Temporary 8th Street Closure for Broad Street Improvement Project
The City of Augusta’s Broad Street Improvement Project will enter a new phase of construction beginning Monday, October 5, 2026, requiring temporary traffic impacts in the downtown corridor.
Sidewalk and Outside Lane Closure: Broad Street between 6th and 7th Streets
Beginning October 5, crews will close the outside lanes of Broad Street between 6th and 7th Streets to begin demolition work as part of the ongoing streetscape improvements. Motorists should expect traffic shifts and use caution when traveling through the area. Access to businesses and properties will be maintained throughout construction whenever possible.
Temporary 8th Street Closure
Also beginning October 5, 8th Street between Broad Street and Ellis Street will be temporarily closed for approximately two weeks to allow crews to install and connect storm drainage infrastructure on the east side of the project. Through traffic on 8th Street will be detoured, and drivers are encouraged to follow posted signage and allow extra travel time. Broad Street traffic will remain open during the closure.
Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use caution in the work zone, follow all posted traffic control devices and remain alert for construction personnel and equipment.
The City of Augusta appreciates the public’s patience as these improvements continue to enhance safety, accessibility and the overall downtown experience.
