Greene Street Update: Work at 3rd Street
The inside lanes of Greene Street between 2nd Street and 3rd Street for the next two weeks. Work will include underground storm drain improvements and traffic signal upgrades.
Broad Street Update: Underground Utility Work
Underground work continues by Georgia Power contractors along Broad Street between 11th Street and 12th Street. Some sections of the sidewalk and edges of the roadway will be closed during the ongoing utility construction.
13th Street Update: Brick Work Continues
The outside lanes will continue to remain closed while brick work at the various intersections continues.
6th Street Update: Start of Pavement Work
The contractor will begin grinding out the old asphalt pavement around the railroad tracks for the next two weeks. Expect lane and intersection closures during grinding operations. The operation will start at the Reynolds Street side of 6th Street and continue to the Walton Way overpass. While the grinding machine moves down the tracks, lane closures and detours will be in place to direct traffic around the work. Traffic flow will slow in these areas as the traffic control adjusts to the grinding operations.
5th Street Update: Northbound Work Continues
Concrete work continues along the northbound side of 5th Street. Flaggers will be used to temporarily close lanes while construction work continues. Expect flagging operations during normal working hours.
Broad Street Update: Work Coming Soon
No traffic control is expected to be installed for the next couple of weeks.
Telfair Street Update: Underground Utility Work
Telfair Street between 8th Street and 9th Street (James Brown Blvd) will be closed this week to install underground piping for storm drains. Detours are in place. Expect delays driving through this area.
13th Street Update: Brickwork Installation
Contractor will be gin install brick crosswalks across 13th Street this week. Expect roaming lane closures at various intersections where work in being done. The work will start on the outside, so the outside lane closures will remain in place. Some side street lanes will also be closed for this work. Expect traffic delays along 13th Street between Walton Way and Reynolds Street.
Greene Street Update: Work Continues in Old Towne
No changes in the traffic control on Greene Street. The current closures will remain for the next few weeks.
6th Street Update: Outside Lane Closures
Lane closures will be ongoing along 6th Street along the length of the project. Detours will be in place when a lane is closed. Expect delays when traffic control is in place.
5th Street Update: Work Near Walton Way
Work will continue on 5th Street between Walton Way and Gordon Hwy. Expect work to also move down 5th Street block by block towards Broad St. Lane closures will be present throughout the project limits. Expect shifting lane closures and delays along the project length.
Telfair Street Update: Road Closure & Detour
Starting Monday, July 22nd, Telfair Street between 11th Street and 12th Street will be closed to all through traffic. All traffic will be detoured to Greene Street. This is necessary to install new underground storm drain pipes and relocate utilities. The closure will be in place starting Monday, July 22nd through Thursday, July 25th, weather permitting. Expect delays in this area. All of the traveling public is encouraged to use alternate routes.
Telfair Street Update: Demolition Begins
The outside lanes along Telfair Street between 4th Street and 13th Street have been closed. The demolition of old concrete structures and trees will take place through next week. Expect changes in the traffic patters at the intersection of Telfair Street and 13th Street.
Greene Street Update: Pipe and Signal Work Continues
Expect lane closures and detours to be in place for the next few weeks along Greene Street between 5th Street and 2nd Street. Detours will be in place when necessary for contractor to work in intersections along this street.
Broad Street Update: Resurfacing Activities Wraps Up
Expect roaming single lane closures along Broad Street between Milledge Road and 15th Street for final paving activities and striping to take place.
13th Street Update: Paving Work Continues
Repaving work along 13th Street between Walton Way and Reynolds Street will continue for the next couple of weeks. Weather permitting, the paving activities should be complete next week. Other miscellaneous work will continue through the rest of July. Expect single lane closures on both sides of the street in both directions. These closures will be changed daily depending on the paving work being done.
6th Street Update: Concrete Work Continues
Expect single lane closures for both directions along 6th Street between Reynolds Street and Fenwick Street for continued concrete work. Detours will be in place when lanes are closed.
5th Street Update: Repaving to Begin
Repaving activities will soon begin on 5th Street between Walton Way and Reynolds Street. All southbound lanes will be closed and traffic detoured along 5th Street starting at Broad Street and continuing through Walton Way. Resurfacing work is expected to begin next week. Flaggers will be in place from Greene Street to Telfair for work in those intersections.
Broad Street Update: Resurfacing Work Begins
Broad Street between Milledge Road and 13th Street will begin construction this week. Outside lane closures will be put in place along Broad Street near Milledge Road as resurfacing work begins. Expect slow traffic and delays along this corridor.
Green Street Update: Continued Subsurface Work
Greene Street will continue to see lane closures and detours due to storm drain work. Expect detours and delays near Sibley Road while work continues. The intersection of Greene Street and 4th Street will be converted to a side street stop (only 4th Street will stop, Greene traffic will flow unimpeded) soon for the construction of a new traffic signal. Expect traffic patters to change at this location. Lane closures and shifts will continue throughout the project for the next few weeks.
13th Street Update: Work Near Railroad Tracks
Expect lane shifts or closures along 13th Street near the railroad tracks. 13th Street will remain one lane in each direction. Expect temporary delays or additional traffic control during paving operations near the railroad tracks.
6th Street Update: Lane Shifts
Lane closures and shifts will be in place along 6th Street between Reynolds Street and Broad Street for the next few weeks. Expect slow travel or detours along this street.
5th Street Update: Lane Closures and Traffic Shifts
Work will begin near the intersection of Walton Way and 5th Street this week. Lane closures will be in place near the intersection on Gordon Hwy, Walton Way, and 5th Street. Expect slow traffic and delays.
Work will also be progressing at 5th Street and Fenwick Street. All southbound lanes will be closed periodically throughout the next couple of weeks as work continues near this location.
5th Street Update: Road Closure for Underground Utility Work
5th Street between Greene Street and Telfair Street will be closed to trough traffic starting today through Friday, April 26th. This closure is necessary for underground water system improvements. Access will be maintained to local businesses during this closure. A detour will be in place. Please use alternate routes during this closure.
13th Street Update: Road Open and Canal Work Progressing
13th Street near Telfair Street has been opened to through traffic with one lane in each direction. The roadway should remain open until the completion of this project. Expect work to continue north to Reynolds Street with one lane closed in each direction for the next few months. Expect traffic delays through this area.
13th Street Update: Concrete Work Continues
Work continues at the canal bridge near Telfair St. The bridge work is almost to the stage where the roadway can be opened. We anticipate that one lane in each direction on 13th Street will reopen prior to the Masters Tournament. The outside lanes along 13th Street between Walton Way and Reynolds St. will remain closed. A lane shift will continue on the Savannah River bridge as you approach Reynolds St.
Greene Street Update: Old Town Work Continues
Construction work continues in the Old Town section of Greene Street. Expect continued closures at the intersections of 3rd St. and 4th St. The outside westbound lane will also remain closed for construction through the Masters Tournament.
6th Street Update: Shoulder Work Continues
Expect single lane shifts and temporary lane closures along 6th Street between Walton Way and Broad St. Outside shoulder concrete work will continue until the Masters Tournament.
5th Street Update: Work on West Side of Street
Work continue along 5th Street between Greene St. and Walton Way. Concrete work continues along the west side of the street. Outside lane closures and lane shifts will continue now through the Masters Tournament. We anticipate that 5th Street between Broad St. and Reynolds St. should reopen to through traffic the week of March 11th.
Greene Street: Drainage and Signal Work In Progress
Expect road closures along Greene Street between 5th Street and 3rd Street for the next few weeks. Local traffic will be able to reach their homes and businesses, but all other traffic will be detoured. Outside lanes along Greene Street will also be closed along the remaining project corridor to East Boundary. Expect traffic delays in this area.
13th Street: Canal Work and Demolition
The outside lanes of 13th Street between Reynolds Street and Telfair Street will continue to be closed. This will affect the traffic coming into Downtown Augusta from North Augusta and South Carolina. Expect traffic delays and a longer commute along this corridor. 13th Street at the Augusta Canal near Telfair Street will continue to remain closed while bridge and embankment work continues over the canal. A detour is in place and expect traffic delays in the area. We are anticipating this portion of 13th Street over the canal reopening to through traffic prior to the 2024 Masters Tournament in April.
6th Street: Work Continues on West Side
The western half of 6th Street will continue to be closed periodically for shoulder and road work between Telfair Street and Greene Street. During those times, only northbound traffic will be allowed along 6th Street.
5th Street Update: Shoulder Work Continues
The outside lanes of 5th Street will continue to be closed along the length of the project between Walton Way and Broad Street. 5th Street between Broad Street and Reynolds Street will continue to be closed to traffic for the foreseeable future.
Greene Street Update: Underground Drainage Work
Expect road closures and detours as portions of the roadway is closed to install underground drainage structures. There will be periodic road closures through the month of January 2024. On 1/23/2024, the intersection of Greene Street and Forsyth Street will be closed and traffic will be detoured. On 1/27/2024 and 1/28/2024, the intersection of Greene Street and Fourth Street will be closed and traffic will be detoured.
13th Street Update: Canal Work Continues
Work continues stabilizing the Augusta Canal embankment under 13th Street. 13th Street at Telfair Street will remain closed into March for these construction activities. Detours are in place and expect traffic delays for the next couple of months.
6th Street Update: Shoulder Construction
Single lane closures along the east side of 6th Street between Fenwick Street and Greene Street. Starting Monday, 1/22/2024, there will be no parking along both sides of 6th Street for the next few months.
5th Street Update: Demo Work Continues
Continued demolition along the road shoulder, east side, between Broad Street and Ellis Street. There will be outside, single lane closures along 5th Street between Broad Street and Ellis Street. There will also be additional lanes closures on 2/2/2024 in the evening at the intersection of 5th Street and Greene Street.
13th Street Update: Block Closures
On 13th Street between Greene Street and Ellis Street, both directions of travel will be closed during the daytime hours for construction work. The roadway will reopen each evening until the next morning. This closure is expected to last the remainder of this week until Friday, January 12, 2024. A detour will be in place during the daytime hours. There will be significant traffic delays in this area. Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes if possible.
Greene Street Update: Outside Lane Work Continues
Expect the outside lanes to be closed in both directions along Greene Street between 5th Street and East Boundary. Starting after the first of 2024, single blocks will be closed and traffic will be detoured while underground storm drain infrastructure is installed. Further block closures will be posted on this page after the holidays.
13th Street Update: Shoulder and Canal Work Continues
There was a delay in the specialty contractor arriving to do the canal work on 13th Street at Telfair Street. 13th Street between Telfair Street and the Augusta Canal will remain closed into 2024 through the winter. The street should open to full traffic prior to the 2024 Masters Tournament. Expect outside lane closures along 13th Street between the canal and Walton Way for the next few months. Shoulder work and demolition will continue along 13th Street between Broad Street and Telfair Street into winter 2024.
6th Street Update: Lane Work Continues
Expect shoulder work to continue along 6th Street between Greene Street and Fenwick Street. Single lane shifts will take place between Telfair and Fenwick after the holidays into January 2024. Detours will be in place for the lane closures.
5th Street Update: Outside Road Work Continues
Outside lane closures will continue between Broad Street and Walton Way. Street will remain closed between Broad Street and Reynolds Street through the rest of 2023 and into 2024. Expect single lane shifts along 5th Street between Ellis Street and Broad Street the first part of 2024.
Greene Street Update: Old Towne Work Continues
Work continues along the outside Greene Street. Expect outside lane closures on both sides of Greene Street between 5th Street and East Boundary. Drainage work will begin Monday, November 27th in the block near Heritage Academy (3rd Street to 4th Street). During the drainage work, this block of Greene Street will be closed and a detour will be in place. Expect traffic delays in this area.
13th Street Update: Project Construction Extends Beyond Telfair Street
13th Street near Telfair Street will remain closed and a detour is in place. The street closure has been extended until February 2024 due to the availability of the specialty contractor and materials. On 13th Street between Telfair Street and Broad Street, the outside lanes will be closed for shoulder infrastructure demolition. Expect heavy traffic delays along this portion of 13th Street through the spring of 2024.
6th Street Update: Work Continues on West Side of the Road
Expect a lane closure on west side of 6th Street between Walton Way and Greene Street while construction work continues on the outside of the roadway.
5th Street Update: Outside Lane Work
The outside lanes of 5th Street between Greene Street and Walton Way will remain closed as crews continue to demolish outside road infrastructure and prepare utilities for the upcoming improvements. Side streets off of 5th Street in this stretch of roadway may be closed for utility work. Detours will be installed where necessary. Expect slow traffic and delays along this portion of 5th Street. 5th Street between Reynolds St. and Broad St. will also remain closed while work continues along this block.

In The News: Broad Street’s Latest Progress & What’s Next to Come
Progress continues on the Broad Street Improvement Project as crews work block by block to upgrade critical infrastructure and transform the downtown corridor.
Augusta Engineering Director Dr. Hameed Malik recently spoke with WRDW about the work happening beneath Broad Street, where crews are navigating aging water, sewer, power, gas and stormwater infrastructure, some dating back nearly 100 years.
While these underground conditions can require adjustments along the way, crews continue to move the project forward, with the Broad Street business corridor through 5th Street still on track for completion by the end of 2026.

Utilities Announcement: Temporary Water Service Interruption Scheduled for Broad Street Businesses on September 2
Augusta Utilities will temporarily interrupt water service to a portion of the north side of Broad Street between 9th Street and 11th Street on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to allow crews to complete necessary repairs.
Approximately 10 businesses along this section of Broad Street will be affected by the temporary service interruption. Augusta Utilities has notified impacted businesses directly and distributed door hangers in advance of the work.
Crews will work efficiently to complete the repairs and restore water service as quickly as possible. Updates will be provided if there are any significant changes to the anticipated schedule.
The City appreciates the patience and understanding of affected businesses and customers as this important maintenance work is completed.

Broad Street Improvement Project Updates Schedule While Maintaining 2026 Completion for Business Corridor
The City of Augusta Engineering Department and project contractors have released an updated construction schedule for the Broad Street Improvement Project as work continues to advance throughout downtown Augusta. With multiple construction zones now active simultaneously, crews are making steady progress on utility upgrades, streetscape enhancements and infrastructure improvements designed to create a safer, more accessible and vibrant corridor for residents, businesses and visitors.
As construction enters several new phases, project teams have refined the sequencing of work activities to maintain momentum and improve overall efficiency across the corridor. The updated timeline reflects current construction conditions and provides the most accurate schedule for work extending through project completion.
Project Schedule: The following schedule outlines the anticipated construction windows for each segment of Broad Street. These dates are subject to adjustment as crews respond to field conditions, weather, and ongoing coordination efforts, but remain focused on delivering long-term improvements with as little disruption as possible.

Traffic Advisory: Broad Street Improvement Project Construction Update
Beginning August 17, crews will begin the next phase of construction for the Broad Street Improvement Project between 11th Street and 10th Street on both sides of Broad Street.
What to Expect
To accommodate new sidewalk and curb alignment construction, outside parking spaces will be temporarily removed within the work zone. Inside parking will remain open and available for use.
Construction will be completed in two phases:
- Phase 1: Active construction area, including the curb, gutter, and adjacent sidewalk section.
- Phase 2: Sidewalk section along the building side, maintained for pedestrian access while Phase 1 construction is underway.
Construction activities will be limited to one phase at a time. Work will begin in Phase 1 while Phase 2 remains open to provide pedestrian access to businesses. Once Phase 1 construction is complete, the work zone will shift to Phase 2, and Phase 1 will reopen for pedestrian use.
This phased approach will allow pedestrians to continue accessing businesses throughout construction. Pedestrians may enter the sidewalk areas closest to storefronts only at designated intersection crosswalks.
A representative from the City of Augusta and E.R. Snell Contractors, Inc. will meet with individual business owners to coordinate the timing of concrete removal and replacement in front of their locations and help minimize disruptions.

Downtown businesses impacted by ongoing construction are eligible for special support through Augusta’s Saturday Market at the Riverwalk. To help local merchants maintain visibility and sales during construction, the Market is offering discounted vendor opportunities and promotional support throughout the fall season.

Traffic Advisory: Outside Phase Construction Begins Between 12th and 11th Streets for Broad Street Improvement Project
Beginning August 10, crews will begin the outside phase of construction on Broad Street between 12th Street and 11th Street, on the left side of the project corridor.
Parking Changes
- Outside parking will be removed in this section to accommodate new sidewalk and curb alignment construction activities.
- Inside parking will remain open for use throughout construction.
Pedestrian Access
Construction in this section will be divided into two phases to help maintain access for businesses and pedestrians:
- Phase 1 — Construction activities
- Phase 2 — Pedestrian access
This approach will allow pedestrians to maintain access to sidewalks in front of businesses while work is underway. Pedestrians will be able to enter Phase 2 areas closest to the buildings/businesses only at the intersection crosswalks.
A representative from the City of Augusta and the contractor will visit each business individually to coordinate the most appropriate time to remove and replace the concrete in front of each location.

Traffic Advisory: 13th Street Closure and Ongoing Lane Closures for Broad Street Improvement Project
Beginning today, 13th Street between Broad Street and Jones Street will be closed for approximately two weeks to allow crews to install new stormwater piping as part of the Broad Street Improvement Project. This work is a critical component of the infrastructure improvements underway in downtown Augusta.
In addition to the 13th Street closure, the outside lanes on Broad Street between 13th Street and 15th Street will remain closed, while the inside lanes remain open to traffic in that section.
Construction also continues along Broad Street with the following lane closures in place:
Broad Street between 13th Street and 12th Street: Outside lanes closed.
Broad Street between 12th Street and 11th Street: Eastbound outside lane closed.
Broad Street between 11th Street and 6th Street: Inside lane closed.
Onsite detour signs will direct motorists safely around the closure. Because this corridor remains an active construction zone, drivers should expect changing traffic patterns, construction equipment and crews working throughout the area. Motorists are encouraged to reduce speed, follow posted signage and allow extra travel time.
